Currently in La Roche Sur Foron in France outside of Geneva staying with our friends Nicole and Fred.
We spent a week in Cefalu, Sicily and I decided that it was just too much to make a movie and do all the other things we are trying to do on the trip -- with no money, no actors, no script, no pre-production, etc. Nicole was expecting me to arrive in France with a plan for the scenes I wanted to shoot. But I had nothing. Will it be like this in every city? Too much work and uncertainty. Particularly for a movie that will probably suck -- basically a long bad student film or glorified tourist home movie.
But then on the last day in Cefalu I thought about all these amazing places we were in and how could I pass up this opportunity. I had started to think that I could do it on a seperate trip later on -- but what is the point of that? We are already here. Why wait?
So I came up with a quick scene for Cefalu (my character on the phone with Cefalu and La Rocca in the background), plus an idea for Nicole and some of her acting friends in France.
When we got here, I told Nicole about what I had in mind and she immediately started to call her fellow actors and set things up. We had our lead actor in no time and we met this evening at a bar to discuss the role and the shoot. We looked at a couple other local bars but then decided on the one we were in and asked them if we could shoot there (the actor did the talking mostly -- I do not speak french). They said they would let us do it tomorrow night, no prob.
So we have a cast (including Nicole and me, plus Fred and others as extras) and locations (the actor's own bedroom plus the bar). All thanks to Nicole.
And thanks too to myself for not giving up.
