Toll the village bells! Let every man, woman and child hear!
We have our workflow!!!!
It's been nearly a year since we realized our editing project file was corrupt. Our initial flailings about to fix it probably made the problem worse, in fact. Over the past year, we've spent countless hours trying to research, troubleshoot and test potential solutions -- all while we continued work on VFX and other tasks.
But essentially, our editing hasn't moved an inch since then.
Happily, today, I can report to you that we have a solid workflow to fix the problem. I won't go into the gory/nerdy details, but it does involve two sets of XML, two different editing software packages and a ton of manual labor relinking media and resetting a handful of in/out points (not as many as we feared initially though).
As a bonus, with some serious additional work we can also relink all our (now properly re-named and re-organized) audio files while retaining the sync work done by our awesome asst. editor Wes. We thought our audio sync work might be lost completely. Thankfully, probably not.
It's still a ton of work, but at least we have a plan to fix it -- and it's lot less labor-intensive as our worst-case scenarios (re-editing the whole film? It might have come to that). We'll likely be able to restart editing again sometime in June, which was our target timeframe.
Whew. A huge milestone. (Thanks in large part to our tireless and inventive post-prod supervisor Vincent Cortez.)
Now back to work.
