In the future, everything is perfect and wonderful.
The year 2070. Planet Earth. Population 9,000,000,000 and counting.
Massive perfect-fidelity computer-generated simulations cater to any interest and every keyword. Billions seek refuge in-world daily, hungry to play out a different storyline, hustling to score fortune, romance or power -- or, more likely, just to escape from it all.
Credit check required, of course.
Mary TwoFiveTwo -- a young man drowning in birthdebt and running out of options -- takes a dodgy low-end job as a beta tester in a new virtual world. Mary's job is simple: report bugs and other system glitches he encounters in this for-profit historical re-enactment of the early 21st century War on Terror.
But the debt continues to pile up for Mary. Despite the new job, he's faced with the horrifying possibility of mindwipe: becoming a wholly-owned subsidiary of his creditors...body, brain and all.
Desperate to avoid bankrupcy, Mary meets a shady businessman who offers him a deal that he can't refuse, but requiring him to betray his only real friend and her family.
And there's a complication.
Every time he tries to log out of this War on Terror simulation, he wakes up in a different body, in a different city -- still in-world.
He's trapped inside.
And his credit is running out.
